Mailbox Lock Replacement: how the work is done
Not every mailbox in front of a house belongs to the person collecting from it, and this service is scoped around that distinction.

Not every mailbox in front of a house belongs to the person collecting from it, and this service is scoped around that distinction. A private curbside box, a house's built-in door slot, and one compartment in a condo or apartment lobby panel are all fair territory, matched to a new lock once the old key situation stops working. A mailbox installed for a whole street by the postal operator is different property, with its own locks and keys handled directly by that operator rather than by a visiting locksmith.
Who shares the panel
When the mailbox is one compartment among many, the locksmith asks a practical question before touching anything: does this change affect only the compartment named, is the household hoping to bring several doors onto a matching set of keys, or is the building coordinating a wider changeover across many units at once? Knowing the answer up front decides whether one lock is measured and replaced or whether a run of compartments is scheduled together, with each one still confirmed against the person or manager responsible for it.
Straightening the compartment door
When prying, a dropped hinge, or years of use have left the little door sitting crooked in its opening, that gets corrected alongside the lock. A bent door is worked back into shape or its hinge is tightened, the latch edge is checked against the frame, and the new lock is only fitted once the door closes flush again. Skipping this step would leave a brand new lock fighting a door that never quite lines up with it, so the frame is addressed first.
The old key stops mattering
Whatever became of the previous key, lost on a trip, left behind by someone who moved out, or simply unaccounted for, it now fits nothing. The cylinder inside the compartment has been swapped rather than repaired, so a key that used to work is just a piece of shaped metal from this point on. That is the entire point of choosing replacement over a repair when the concern was really about who else might have held a copy.
