Notes for homeowners and drivers
You do not need to become an expert to make good choices about locks. A little understanding goes a long way. These short pieces give you that: how keys are copied, what a lock grade means, when a repair beats a replacement and how to prepare for the unexpected.

Good questions about locks

Lockout Services
My key snapped off in the lock. Is that still a lockout call?
It starts the same way and adds one step. The broken blade is removed with extraction tools that grip it and draw it out, rather than pushing it deeper, and then the door is opened normally. A key rarely breaks in a healthy cylinder, so the locksmith checks the pins and springs afterwards and cleans or services the cylinder if wear caused it. A new key is cut from the two halves or from the code, since a weakened copy would snap again. Home Lockout Service
Can we put a keyed deadbolt on both sides of the back door for extra security?
On a door people leave through while the building is occupied, the door needs to open from inside with one motion and no key, so a key-both-sides bolt is not the right tool there. Security is added instead with a heavy-duty exit device and a reinforced strike, a keyed trim outside, an alarm contact, or a door position sensor on the access system, all of which keep the way out clear. My key has a chip in it. Does that survive the break?
Usually yes. The transponder chip and the remote electronics live in the plastic head, and the head is the part that stays in your hand when the blade snaps. Once the blade is extracted, a new blade of the right profile is cut and fitted to the old head, so the vehicle continues to recognize the chip without reprogramming. Only a cracked or soaked head needs the electronics moved to a new shell. Broken Key Extraction
How long does a break-in repair take?
It depends on how much gave way. A new lockset and a reinforced strike on a sound frame is a modest job. Bonding a split jamb, sleeving a crushed door edge, reinforcing the hinges and rekeying several cylinders takes longer, and a shattered frame means a securing visit now and a second visit after the carpenter. The locksmith gives a sense of the time once the damage has been seen, and the opening is secured before leaving even when a part has to be ordered. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
What happens to my old keys?
They become ordinary pieces of brass. Once the cylinders are pinned to the new combination, the old keys turn nothing on your property, so there is no security reason to keep or hide them. Hand them to the locksmith for disposal or drop them in the metal recycling. If a former roommate or contractor still has one, it no longer matters, which is the whole reason for the visit. Keep only the new set, counted and tagged. Lock Rekeying
The door has to be pulled before the old bolt will lock. Will a new one fix that?
The new bolt will only lock as smoothly as the door and frame let it, so the locksmith deals with the cause as part of the installation. A door that has sagged on loose hinges gets longer hinge screws or a shim, thick weatherstrip is trimmed, and the strike is set from the bolt's actual position with the door closed. The pocket is bored deep enough for a full throw. Afterwards the bolt should slide with fingertip effort. Deadbolt Installation
What does a higher grade of lock actually give me?
Grades follow ANSI/BHMA standards, with Grade 1 the highest and Grade 3 the lightest, and residential hardware carries a separate label that scores security, durability and finish. The grade reports how the lock performed on the standard's own operational, strength and security tests; a higher grade often comes with a longer bolt, a sturdier housing, pins that resist picking and a strike built to anchor into the framing, but those features are worth confirming on the specific model rather than assumed from the grade alone. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Is it worth repairing an old mortise lock instead of replacing it?
Usually, yes. The mechanisms are simple and robust, and what fails is nearly always a spring, dried grease or wear on one part, all of which are repairable on a bench. Replacing the lock with a modern cylindrical set means boring a large hole through the door stile and filling the old pocket, which is more work and changes the door for good. A rebuilt case keeps the original trim and keeps the door intact. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

High Security Locks
My safe was in a fire or a flood. Does that change how it gets opened?
It can. Heat or water exposure sometimes trips a relocker or damages the bolt work independently of the combination lock, so the locksmith checks for that first rather than assuming the lock itself has failed. A safe with fire-rated insulation may also need that lining checked once open, separately from the lock work. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Will you service a safe that another company installed?
Yes, servicing does not depend on who did the original installation. The locksmith opens the bolt-work, tests the lock through a full cycle, checks the anchoring underneath, and replaces batteries in an electronic lock as needed, regardless of the brand or who fitted it originally. Not knowing the history of the unit just means a slightly more thorough first look before any work begins. Safe Installation & Servicing
Will the new cylinder fit my existing locks?
Usually. High security cylinders are made in the common formats: key-in-knob and lever, rim, mortise and interchangeable core, and many are designed to drop into popular residential and commercial locks. The locksmith identifies your format and confirms fit before ordering. Where a lock is an odd size or in poor shape, a matching lock body is fitted instead, and the door preparation is reused wherever it is standard. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
We are a landlord with a tenant leaving. When should the unit be rekeyed?
Between tenants is the ideal moment: the departing tenant has handed back their keys, the new one has not yet received any, and the unit is empty for the work. The incoming tenant then starts on keys nobody else has held, and the landlord's own master or emergency key is set up at the same time. Where a lease has ended in dispute, the locksmith asks to see the paperwork before changing locks on a unit that still holds a tenant's goods. Commercial Rekeying
How is accountability maintained when several people hold different levels of keys?
Through the chart and issuance log rather than memory. Each level is tied to named roles or people, each key is marked to reflect its level rather than the door it opens, and any change of hands is recorded with a signed receipt. That record names every authorized holder for a door, though it can only account for a key that was never copied, loaned or picked up by someone outside that list. Master Key System Design
Can access control be added to just one door, or does it have to cover the whole building?
A single door with its own standalone reader is a complete installation on its own, and plenty of businesses start there. If more doors need controlling later, a networked controller can be added at that point, or the building can simply add another standalone unit. Nothing about starting small commits the business to expanding, and nothing about a single-door job rules out growing the system later. Access Control Installation
Can exit hardware be styled to match the rest of the building's finishes?
Yes, within what the door's rating allows. Exit devices and their trim come in a range of finishes to sit alongside other door hardware in the building, and outside trim in particular, being the visible part from a public side, can be chosen to match levers or pulls used elsewhere. A fire-rated opening narrows the finish choice somewhat, since the whole assembly has to stay within its listing. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys
The lock is frozen and the door will not budge. What will you do?
Ice is handled gently. Lock de-icer and mild warmth free the cylinder so it turns without force, and a door stuck to its seal is released by pressing along the edge to crack the ice rather than pulling the handle, which can tear the rubber. Hot water is never used because it refreezes and can crack glass. Afterwards the cylinder is lubricated with whatever product the vehicle maker specifies and the seals are treated with silicone. Will I get a written estimate before the work starts?
You should expect one. Consumer rules for motor vehicle repair work in this province call for a written estimate before any charge and for your authorization of the work, and a good locksmith works that way as a matter of course. The estimate names what is being supplied: the blank or fob, the cutting, the programming, any erasing of old keys and the number of keys, so you can see the parts of the job before agreeing. Car Key Replacement
What if the fob's battery is already low?
A low battery in the original does not stop a spare from being made, since the chip and code stored inside still respond during programming even as the battery fades. It is worth mentioning the low battery when you call, though, since the new fob is a natural moment to have a fresh battery on hand for both keys and to note which type each one takes. Spare Car Key Duplication
Does key fob programming use my car's diagnostic port?
On most vehicles, yes. The same connection point used for other vehicle diagnostics is typically how a fob's registration procedure communicates with the car's onboard systems. A few older or simpler key systems are programmed through a different in-car sequence instead, which is one more reason the vehicle's year and model are checked before the procedure begins.
